Acoustic Glass and Sound Insulation in Luxembourg — Partitions, Doors, Façades

Acoustic glass puts an end to the idea that glass cannot keep sound out. Acoustic laminated glass, double glazing and partitions certified up to 51.6 dB by Fraunhofer IBP: Vitralux brings you the transparency without the noise, from the office to the façade.

When glass insulates as well as concrete

The acoustic performance of glass is no longer a sales promise: it is measured, quantified and certified. The quint-it qi2 acoustic glass partitions installed by Vitralux were tested by Fraunhofer IBP in Munich — Europe's reference institute for building acoustics — in December 2024 and February 2025: up to 51.6 dB for a door and 49 dB for a partition (test series 12334).

The principle is always the same: acoustic laminated glass, made of two panes bonded by a high-performance interlayer that dissipates the energy of sound waves, combined with meticulous sealing. The glass keeps the safety properties of ordinary laminated glass: if it breaks, the fragments stay held by the interlayer.

Vitralux applies that expertise to every kind of glazing: office partitions, glass doors, windows and façades exposed to noise. VFC Silence acoustic laminated glass is held in stock in our Luxembourg workshop, cut to measure and made up into acoustic double glazing.

How it works

What determines the sound insulation of a piece of glazing

Factor 01

The mass of the glass

The heavier and thicker the glass, the more sound energy it absorbs. That is why thick acoustic laminated build-ups reach the best insulation values.

Factor 02

The acoustic interlayer

Acoustic laminated glass is made of two panes bonded by a high-performance acoustic interlayer that dissipates the mechanical energy of sound waves. It keeps the safety properties of ordinary laminated glass: if the glass breaks, the fragments stay in place.

Factor 03

Seals and workmanship

Sound travels through gaps just as readily as through the glass itself. Perimeter seals, door bottom seals and taped profile joints are essential: even the best-performing glass is undone by an acoustic short circuit in the assembly.

Factor 04

Acoustic double glazing

Two panes separated by a cavity: combining acoustic laminated glass with an air gap improves the attenuation further, thermally as well as acoustically. Our acoustic laminated glass can be made up into acoustic double glazing.

VFC Silence acoustic laminated glass

VFC Silence is a high-performance acoustic laminated glass developed to make buildings noticeably quieter. It is particularly valued in urban settings, in offices, hotels and homes close to a source of noise. Three build-ups are held in stock, with cutting to measure to the millimetre, edgework, drilling before lamination and assembly into acoustic double glazing.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about acoustic glass

Rw is the weighted sound reduction index, measured to EN ISO 717-1. A wall with Rw = 40 dB cuts the perceived sound by a factor of 100. An Rw of 51.6 dB means that a normal conversation at 65 dB on the other side of the wall arrives at roughly 13 dB — barely louder than a whisper. For comparison, a good 10 cm masonry wall reaches about 45 to 50 dB.

It is glass made of two panes bonded by a high-performance acoustic interlayer that cuts sound transmission significantly while keeping the safety properties of ordinary laminated glass: if the glass breaks, the fragments stay held by the interlayer. Vitralux stocks VFC Silence in three build-ups (44.2, 55.2 and 66.2), with cutting to measure, edgework and assembly into acoustic double glazing.

Yes. Acoustic glass is available clear, and its transparency takes nothing away from its performance: what governs the insulation is the build-up (laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer), not the way it looks. Satin (frosted) versions are available too, adding visual privacy to acoustic privacy.

It all depends on the build-up and on the workmanship. Plain 8 mm toughened glass offers limited attenuation (roughly 30 to 35 dB depending on the seals and the profiles): enough to soften background noise, not enough to keep conversations private. Specialist acoustic systems such as the quint-it qi2 partition reach up to 49 dB for a partition and 51.6 dB for a door, certified by Fraunhofer IBP — levels comparable to a masonry wall.

Yes. The values quoted for the quint-it qi2 acoustic partition come from official tests by Fraunhofer IBP in Munich, series 12334, carried out in December 2024 and February 2025. The documentation is available on request for clients, architects and acoustic consultants, with the exact test references and the test conditions.
