Frequently asked questions about fire-rated glazing
Class E glazing holds back flame and smoke but gives no protection against radiant heat: people and materials on the other side can still be affected by the thermal radiation. Class EI glazing adds insulation: it limits heat transfer and actively protects the occupants. For the great majority of applications (corridor doors, partitions, subdivisions), EI is what the regulations require.
Yes, and it is one of the jobs Vitralux does most often. When the glass in a fire door is cracked, broken or failing, the glass alone can be replaced in the existing frame — the whole door does not have to go. The new glass must match or exceed the classification of the original. Vitralux checks the compatibility and supplies the matching CE certificate.
Yes. Modern fire-rated glass (borosilicate glass, special laminated glass) comes very close to ordinary glass to look through. The optical quality is excellent and does not get in the way of the view. Some products can also be satin-finished or screen printed while keeping their fire rating.
Fire-rated glazing that is properly installed and looked after has no theoretical service life. It does have to be replaced, however, as soon as it shows a crack, a chip, delamination or any visible damage. Even an apparently minor crack can compromise the fire rating of the whole assembly. The periodic inspections required in public buildings are what usually pick these up.
