The old belief that glass cannot keep sound out belongs to the past. The quint-it qi2 system is a glazed office partition designed specifically for sound insulation: every detail of its build — the double acoustic laminated glass, the special connecting profiles, the perimeter seals and the floor seals — has been worked out to get the most out of airborne sound reduction.

The performance of the quint-it qi2 system was measured by the Fraunhofer IBP in Munich in December 2024 and February 2025, the European reference institute for building acoustics. The 12334 series of tests covers 14 different door and partition configurations, with build-ups ranging from standard MDF to double acoustic laminated glass. The results are published and available on request.

The four factors that decide how a glass partition performs acoustically

Factor 01

The mass of the glass

The heavier and thicker the glass, the more sound energy it absorbs. That is why the acoustic laminated build-ups (2× 12.5 mm) reach the best figures: the 0.5 mm SI acoustic interlayer between the two panes dissipates the mechanical energy of the sound waves.

Factor 02

The perimeter seals

Sound travels through gaps just as readily as through the glass itself. The quint-it qi2 system uses special seals right around every panel and every door. Taping the profile joints is a key step in the installation.

Factor 03

The door bottom seal

The door is the acoustic weak point of any partition. The qi2 system has double bottom seals that compress against the floor as the door closes, shutting the gap underneath it.

Factor 04

The profiles and the assembly

The post profiles of the qi2 system are designed to avoid acoustic bridges: structure-borne transmission (sound travelling through the framework) is kept to a minimum by the damping materials built into the profiles.

Your questions about the quint-it qi2 acoustic partition

Rw is the weighted sound reduction index, measured to EN ISO 717-1. A wall with Rw = 40 dB cuts the perceived sound by a factor of 100. An Rw of 51.6 dB means that a normal conversation at 65 dB on the other side of the partition arrives at around 13 dB — a whisper you can barely hear. For comparison, a good 10 cm blockwork wall reaches roughly 45 to 50 dB.

Yes. Acoustic laminated glass is available clear. Transparency has no bearing on the acoustic performance: it is the make-up of the glass (double laminated with an SI acoustic interlayer) that decides the insulation, not how it looks. Frosted versions (Satinato) are available too, for spaces where visual privacy is wanted alongside acoustic privacy.

Sound is a physical phenomenon and it always finds the path of least resistance. Even with very high-performance acoustic glass, the smallest gaps between profiles create acoustic short circuits that degrade the overall insulation considerably.
