Colour seen through glass: a depth nothing else reaches

The principle behind lacquered glass is simple and brilliant at once: the lacquer goes on the back of the pane, and the glass itself both protects and amplifies it. Looking at a lacquered glass wall means looking at the colour through several millimetres of glass, and no other wall covering can reproduce that depth. Interior designers have known it for a long time.

Vitralux makes made-to-measure lacquered glass panels in Luxembourg, for walls and spaces of every kind: a headboard in a bedroom, a feature wall in a living room, the full lining of a bathroom, a panel behind a bar or a reception desk, cladding for an office wall. Every panel is cut to the exact size, lacquered in the colour you choose and fitted by our technicians.

Gloss lacquer

The surface reflects the light and amplifies the colour. A luxurious look with the greatest depth of all. It shows fingerprints more readily, but they wipe off instantly.

Satin lacquer

The middle ground between gloss and matt. Very popular, because it gives fine depth of colour while showing marks far less than gloss.

Matt lacquer

A surface with no reflection. A contemporary, warm look, particularly handsome in neutral tones (beige, taupe, grey). Fewer fingerprints.

Clear glass (backlit)

Clear glass set over a painted wall or a decorative surface: the glass protects without hiding. The ideal option for keeping an original wall while making it waterproof.

The cut-outs available

Glass that fits your wall

Sockets and switches

Precise cut-outs to the exact size of the electrical boxes. The glass fits whatever layout you already have.

Built-in or wall-mounted extractor hood

The cut-out follows the shape of the hood: straight or more involved. Depending on the layout, the glass runs behind or around the hood.

Taps and waste trap

A pass-through for wall-mounted taps or an exposed waste trap: a precision circular cut-out.

Corners and recesses

Fitted to any geometry: rounded corners, angles that are not square, window sills, rooms that are not rectangular.

Cut-outs are made before toughening

Every cut-out is made before the glass is toughened: nothing can be cut once it is. The exact size and position of each cut-out are taken during the survey visit.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about lacquered glass on the wall

A lacquered glass splashback has its colour applied to the back of the pane: the colour is completely opaque and very intense. Clear glass — or low-iron glass — is used where an existing surface is to be protected but not hidden: decorative tiling, a particular wall finish or original ceramic. The clear glass then works as a waterproof protective pane in front of the surface already there.

Yes, and that is one of the great advantages of lacquered glass: it is bonded straight onto the existing tiles, with nothing stripped out and no demolition work. The special adhesive grips the glazed surface of the tiles perfectly. The grout lines then disappear entirely behind the glass panel.

Yes, with one caveat: toughened lacquered glass is heat-resistant, but we recommend a gap of roughly 15 to 20 cm between the edge of the splashback and the hob — induction, gas or ceramic. Where there is direct and prolonged contact with an intense heat source, a colourless protective pane can be added locally.

The splashback is held by a special adhesive: removing it is technically possible, but the panel has to be eased off carefully. Depending on the substrate and how long it has been up, the wall may need a small amount of making good afterwards. Unlike tiling there is no cement grout and no mortar, so the whole job is far cleaner.

Yes. The lacquer sits on the back of the glass, completely protected from damp, steam and cleaning products by the glass itself. The colour does not shift, yellow or stain. It is one of the main reasons lacquered glass is regarded as the longest-lasting material for a kitchen splashback.
