Toughened glass, laminated glass, VSG, TSG, safety glass: these terms come up in every conversation about glazing, yet few people understand the difference. This guide explains the logic behind each type of glass in plain language, sets out their strengths and weaknesses, and helps you choose the right material for your application.
Toughened glass (TSG): resistance to impact
Toughened glass is ordinary glass that has been heated to more than 600°C and then cooled very quickly. That heat treatment creates internal stresses which make the glass 4 to 5 times more impact-resistant than ordinary glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it crumbles into thousands of small, blunt fragments — far safer than ordinary glass, which produces large, pointed shards.

Laminated glass (VSG): safety through staying in place
Laminated glass is made of two sheets of glass or more, bonded together by a polymer interlayer (PVB, SGP or polyurethane). When it breaks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer: the glazing stays in place, with no opening and no falling shards. That property is exactly what makes it mandatory for balustrades, glass roofs and façades.
